Communications Monitoring, IT software, and the Question “What Do You Do?”
Recently I attended a rock climbing competition for my son, and as you do at these events, I met family members of the kids on his team. In these conversations, it invariably comes to the, “What do you do for a living?” question. Sometimes I answer with the easy out, “I sell IT software.” I might go out on a limb and mention “communications monitoring.” But it’s really more than that.
I am the Vice President of Marketing for LVM, Inc. While I am not one for fancy job titles, I have found it matters to many. I am responsible for the messaging that brings us new partners as well as the messaging that our partners use to bring them new customers.
We sell through a partner channel, so my customers are middle men (and women). They are trying to bring the right technology to their customers to they can make the right decisions for their businesses.
What the VP of Marketing at a Communications Monitoring Company Does
Really the answer should be something more like this:
I work for a technology company that sells a bundle of software applications branded as VXSuite. We help companies with communications monitoring. We deliver analytics about the calls they make and receive and if they have enough phone lines for those calls. Many companies are using Voice over IP (VoIP) instead of traditional copper phone lines.
When companies switch to VoIP it takes more work to continue to deliver quality phone service. Our software helps them determine where issues are occurring that are causing quality issues.
My role as VP Marketing requires me to know the products intimately and be able to help explain the value for partners as well as for end-users. It is sometimes a challenge to deliver messaging for both perspectives.
What VXSuite Does
It’s not that unusual for me to run into people who have a hard time understanding what I do. And it’s a familiar feeling; here at VXSuite, we run into people who have questions about what we do all the time.
People have questions about our different communications monitoring products, questions about how to use our products with multiple phone systems, how many logins they can have. For those questions, there’s a VXSuite FAQ section.
But I don’t carry around FAQ handouts to my kid’s events.
I love my job. I love that every day brings a new challenge. I love learning how we can make marketing easier for our partners. Discovering tools like coschedule, canva, dollar photo and hootsuite have made my job easier and more fun.
Now if I could just make the rock-climbing parents understand.
